Have you ever wondered why some people just seem to be able to create ideas from nothing? Like pulling a rabbit out of a hat? Boom, there is another one! Do you ask yourself: where do they get it from?

I’ve been studying successful idea generators for some time now and discovered that there are some similarities to their mindsets. They seem to share (at least) 5 personality traits that help them in their idea generation process.

Since you are still here, those personality traits (or “mindsets”) are:

Understanding that your ideas are NOT about you - yes, they come from you, but once out there, they are 100% about the recipient.
Courage to start. I bet that you know someone who has an awesome idea laying in the drawer for nothing. You are not that someone, right?
Willingness to fail. Imagine what would happen had Edison given up his light bulb attempts after 9998 (well, someone would probably take over, but you get the point).
Patience. Patience. Patience. Patience.
Edge. You might in theory be successful at creating ideas, but if they don’t stand out - or if YOU don’t stand out, you need a heck of a marketing budget to convince the world to buy what you are selling. In the words of Marilyn Monroe:

It's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.

Test yourself - do you possess all those traits? Is there something you need to work on? Personally, I have discovered that patience comes with age (at least for me), which means that there is hope. And the minute I understood that my ideas are not about me, my business became profitable.

First disclaimer: remember - even your ideas are all about the customer, people want a piece of YOU. They want to get to know the person behind the product/service/offering. They want a story. Give it to them. But remember that it’s still about what’s in it for them.

Last disclaimer: to successfully create ideas isn’t the same thing as creating successful ideas - OMG, how we could get nerdy on this one. Perhaps we will. Stay tuned.
